India has 12 dedicated Mountain Warfare Divisions - this, a reflection of the fact that Kashmir is the main area of confrontation with Pakistan. Both countries have fought out some ogf the highest altitude battles in history over this disputed area.

High Altitude Warfare School: The High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS), Gulmarg is a unique training establishment imparting specialised Mountain Warfare and Winter Warfare Training to Indian Army personnel.
From a humble beginning as the 19 Infantry Division Ski School in 1948, the High-Altitude Warfare School has over the years become the Army's nodal agency for "specialised training and dissemination of doctrines" in high-altitude, mountain and snow warfare.
